Sunday Hunting 2017
January 1, 2017. Here we go again, this time as SB123. Our last bill, SB1065 was allowed to expire without a vote. Chairman Gillespie of the House simply would not bring it forward for a vote. Multiple attempts to contact him were made without success. His office personnel would only say that he did not bring the bill forward because other representatives would have amended it sending it to its grave. So instead, he killed it by neglect. His response was questionable because we reached out to those representatives he claimed would amend it. They gave assurances that they would not. In fact they claimed to support our bill. Nevertheless, Representative Gillespie was not moved.
This year Senator Scavello brought the bill back as SB 123. We will once again follow our bill through the Senate and hopefully the House. I don’t know how this will play out when it gets to Chairman Gillespie but I urge the good people of York County to make it clear to him that this bill is more about responsible conservation than hunting. As falconers we know the importance of allowing our birds to fly every day. Best practices in falconry make SB123 a no-brainer for anyone who cares about the health and well-being of our birds.
